So let me begin by very simply, yet very sincerely expressing gratitude and appreciation to you catechists for the extraordinary and indispensable ministry of faith formation you exercise in the church.

Yours indeed is a challenging role, namely, that of imparting religious values and of fostering an understanding of faith in our secularist age, of preparing our young and adults for the sacraments of baptism, confirmation, Eucharist, reconciliation, and marriage and of passing on the precious heritage of our Catholic Christian tradition.

So I salute you who are the frontline evangelists in our church for your dedication and commitment, for your vision and sense of the church, for your patience in working with inadequate resources, at low wages, in a role that is largely unsung, and above all for the personal witness you offer to how the Christian life is lived in practice.
